English Language Carnival

Waking up at an ungodly hour to venture to a kampung in the depths of Hulu Langat on Valentine’s Day no less, certainly didn’t faze our 20-odd members and guests (many of whom were first timers to a Rotaract project!).  But it was all for a good cause – we were at Kampung Sungai Lui to introduce English to its kids and residents through a fun carnival.

A joint effort with our Rotary Club KL Diraja and the Persatuan Penduduk Kampung Sg Lui, we were surprised at the registration desk when close to 150+ children swarmed the table to sign up for the various activities such as Story Telling & Public Speaking, Taboo Word Game, Spelling Bee, Scrabble, Drawing, Essay Writing and a Family Treasure Hunt.

The rather hot day passed by in a blink (probably because we were having such a good time ourselves mingling with the kids) but by the end of it, we could all say that it was an eye-opener for us – especially the level of literacy (some Std 3 kids still couldn’t write their own names!) and not to mention, English in rural villages in our country.
